Culture & Community: Reflecting on Dia de Los Muertos 2019

Originally Published: October 2019

Through our ongoing partnership with Columbia County Current, Beach & Bartolo is proud to share the unique traditions that make living in the Hudson Valley so special. In November 2019, The Chatham Berry Farm hosted its second annual Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration at the scenic Greenhouse Cidery.

A Night of Remembrance at The Cidery

Dia de Los Muertos is a vibrant Mexican holiday dedicated to honoring the memories of loved ones. In 2019, The Chatham Berry Farm brought this rich history to our local community with a special evening focused on gratitude and heritage.

The celebration included several meaningful community elements:

  • The Community Altar (Ofrenda): Neighbors were invited to add their own tributes to a shared altar, creating a deeply personal experience.

  • Traditional Arts: Face painting featuring the iconic calavera (skull) and La Calavera Catrina helped bring the holiday’s visual history to life.

  • Fireside S'mores: A cozy fire pit provided a gathering place for families to share stories and enjoy the crisp November air.

Local Flavors and Sounds

The evening was a showcase of Columbia County talent and agriculture. Guests enjoyed live music from local favorites Scott Stockman & Dan Garcia, while dining on homemade Mexican cuisine by Gloria Morales.

The beverage menu featured a "who's who" of regional producers:

  • Small-Batch Hard Cider: Crafted right on-site at The Greenhouse Cidery.

  • NYS Craft Beer & Wine: Featuring Tousey Winery.

  • Local Spirits: Highlighting Grazin’ Spirits and Hillrock Distillery.

  • Seasonal Favorites: Hot apple cider and fresh apple cider donuts for all ages.

  • Location: The Greenhouse Cidery at The Chatham Berry Farm, 2309 Route 203, Chatham, NY 12037

  • Date: Friday, November 1, 2019
