The history of the Village of Chatham is as rich as the architecture that defines it. If you ask a local for a landmark, most will point you toward One Main Street. The iconic Clock Tower has stood as a symbol of our community’s resilience for over a century.
After a devastating fire in 1869 destroyed much of Main Street, this unique structure was rebuilt in 1872 by William Woodbridge. In a different era, Woodbridge sold the building to the Village for just $5,000. Over the years, it has worn many hats: Town Hall, police court, and even the original home of the Chatham Fire Company.
An Appreciating Legacy Today, the Clock Tower remains the proud centerpiece of our Village. Looking back at its sales history—including its 2010 sale for $230,000—we see a clear illustration of the power of long-term real estate. From a $5,000 civic building to a high-value commercial landmark, the Clock Tower proves that while markets fluctuate, quality architecture in a "Central Regional Location" stands the test of time.
